Public Information Office of CC- Land HQ Madrid

On November 28th, the Allied Land Component Command of NATO (CC-Land HQ) in Madrid, Retamares, hosted a symposium on the 25th anniversary of Spain in the Organization of the North Atlantic Treaty. The event was organized by the US Navy League, Madrid Council (USNL), in cooperation with the Spanish Atlantic Association (AAE). Both organizations were supported from the beginning by the Ministry of Defense and the CC-Land HQ Madrid, commanded by Lieutenant General Cayetano Miró Valls, and sponsored by the company Lockheed Martin España.

In his welcoming remarks, the President of the USNL, Madrid Council, Thomas B. Denegre, acknowledged the assistance of all and in particular the Secretary General of Defense Policy (SEGENPOL) in such an important symposium. Likewise, the President of the AAE, and past Minister of Defense, Julián García Vargas said "it is a pleasure to observe how, after this long period, the Spanish Armed Forces are fully integrated into NATO." He also highlighted the fact that Spain joining NATO has made a lot of modernization in doctrine, techniques, tactics, procedures and the mentality of the Spanish Armed Forces.

The symposium, named “A NATO for the XXI Century" was held over two sessions with their respective thematic panel discussions, both with significant moderators and guests of honor.

In the final session, Lieutenant General Miró highlighted that "NATO is an organization which makes us share the same values and goals, to promote peace and prosperity in the world and we, the military, have to win over the population to our goals and, subsequently, isolate the enemy, thereby obtaining the full support and cooperation of our civilian colleagues on the ground".

After his speech, the Commander of CC Land HQ Madrid passed the podium to General of the Army Félix Sanz Roldán, Chief of Defense, emphasized that "the first benefit of joining NATO was the development of a real defense policy and military strategy". He continued that "NATO has changed considerably since the Strategic Concept of 1999; it has grown and in the near future will probably do more so". As for the Spanish staff in NATO he highlighted that "more than 600 Spanish Officers and Sub-officers are integrated into the various Headquarters of the organization; 1670 Spanish soldiers are operating under the NATO flag in different scenarios and that Spain is the first or second largest supplier of troops to the NRF.”

After his speech, General Sanz received from the President of Madrid Council, the highest award given by the USNL, it’s Scroll of Honor worded    In recognition for his work as the Chief of Defense and Member of the NATO Military Committee to harmonize and grow the interests of Spain in NATO”

Next, Lieutenant General Miró was awarded a Scroll of Honor worded”    In recognition for the constant effort in making a reality of the interests of NATO and the dissemination of the values of this alliance throughout his sphere of influence.”

At the conclusion Thomas Denegre jointly with Eva García, Vice-President of the Madrid Council, closed the event with thanks to all presenters and participants
